A second turtle nest at Golden Bay hatched successfully late Tuesday night, with more than 30 hatchlings making their debut.
The nest, which had been showing signs of impending hatching for several days, began exhibiting noticeable surface shifts, prompting volunteers to anticipate the event.
By Tuesday evening, the top of the nest had developed a visible crater, and the shifting sands signaled that hatching was imminent.
At approximately 11 pm, rescuers observed several hatchling heads emerging from the crater. The hatchlings began their journey to the sea shortly before midnight.
Volunteers, using red lights to guide the young turtles, watched as the hatchlings made their way towards the ocean, vanishing beneath the moonlit waves.
Initial estimates from the volunteers suggest that between 30 and 34 turtles hatched, with the possibility of more emerging in the following days.
This successful hatching follows the emergence of 44 hatchlings from the first turtle nest last week at Golden Bay.
Currently, six more turtle nests are expected to hatch later this summer, with four in Malta and two in Gozo, contributing to a record-setting eight nests observed this year.
