Delhi authorities are in the process of determining the total number of exotic pets registered through the Parivesh portal. Currently, they have information only about pets registered with the forest department via demand drafts. An official from the department stated, “The exact number of exotic animals in Delhi will be known after the Parivesh portal data is reviewed post-August 31. To date, fewer than ten individuals have submitted their registrations through the forest department.” It is worth noting that multiple exotic animals can be included on a single form, with a registration fee of ₹1,000 per application.
Under the Living Animal Species Rules 2024, individuals who possess exotic species listed in Schedule 4 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972, including ball pythons and iguanas, are required to report these animals and apply for registration electronically through the Parivesh Portal. These rules, which were announced by the Centre on February 28, aim to ensure proper monitoring and management of exotic species.
This information is shared with the chief wildlife warden to oversee the welfare of these animals and to combat illegal smuggling. The official added that penalties and legal actions for violations will be enforced as directed by the Union Environment Ministry.
