Snake Causes Power Outage in Mérida

by SHINE

In Mérida, a power outage affecting hundreds in the Centro district was caused by a snake coming into contact with high-voltage power lines. The incident occurred on the roof of a hotel on Calle 52 between 67 and 69. The snake’s attempt to traverse medium-to-high voltage cables resulted in an explosion that killed the reptile instantly.

The power outage left local businesses and several side streets without electricity for several hours. The explosion created a chaotic scene, requiring cleanup by workers from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

Witnesses to the explosion quickly alerted authorities, prompting a response from a CFE unit to address the power disruption.

This event highlights a growing trend in Yucatán, where snake sightings in urban areas have become more frequent. Recent reports indicate an increase in such incidents, particularly in municipalities like Kanasín and Umán within the Mérida metropolitan area.

Experts attribute this rise in snake encounters to the rainy season, which drives reptiles from their natural habitats into urban areas. Additionally, urban expansion into formerly forested regions contributes to increased snake sightings.

While emergency services usually manage to capture and relocate these animals safely, some situations, like the recent Mérida incident, can lead to fatalities for the reptiles.

Although stories of venomous snakes are common in Yucatán, encounters with these dangerous species are rare. The peninsula is home to five venomous snake species: the Variable Coral Snake, Neotropical Rattlesnake, Cantil, Barba Amarilla, and Jumping Pitviper. Most of these species are nocturnal and are typically found in specific regions, with few posing a risk near Mérida.

Experts advise taking standard precautions when in snake habitats, such as avoiding tall grass and being cautious around underbrush. Familiarity with the appearance of venomous snakes can also help in distinguishing between dangerous and harmless species.

Despite some non-venomous snakes mimicking venomous ones, most snakes in the region are harmless and play a vital role in controlling rodent populations.
