Brevard County, Florida – Brevard Zoo has announced the euthanasia of Tate, a 36-year-old African spurred tortoise, following complications from a major surgery.
In early July, veterinarians discovered a large bladder stone in Tate, which prompted a complex surgical procedure to remove it. Although the initial surgery was successful, Tate’s condition worsened with shifting of the surgical flap and infection. Despite efforts to manage the infection, the prognosis remained grim.
Dr. Rachel Turner noted that the decision to euthanize was made after evaluating the severe risks of further surgery. Tate, who had been with the zoo since 1998, was a beloved figure and will be remembered fondly by both staff and visitors. His presence brought joy and valuable lessons to those who cared for him.
