YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)— In a recent sighting, a local photographer has documented the presence of an invasive watersnake in Yuma, this time feasting on a bullfrog. This new sighting follows a similar discovery made last week, where an invasive watersnake was spotted in a stream near Fortuna Ponds.
Wildlife photographer Banook Rodarate captured the scene at the West Wetlands, where the snake was observed consuming the bullfrog.
“I heard a frog making noise, and when I looked, I saw the snake pulling the bullfrog into the water,” Rodarate explained. “The snake then dragged the frog away, but I couldn’t determine if it had finished eating or if the frog managed to escape.”
According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the diet of the bandid watersnake primarily includes bullfrogs, fish, and other amphibians typical of aquatic environments. This species, which is native to the Midwestern and Eastern United States, is not normally found in the Yuma area.
