Governor Little Boosts Funding to Safeguard Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer

Governor Brad Little has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the agricultural economy of eastern Idaho while ensuring the preservation of water resources for future generations. In a recent announcement, Governor Little revealed an additional $10 million in funding aimed at revitalizing the eastern Snake Plain aquifer, a crucial step in the state’s broader strategy to secure its water future.

Governor Little emphasized the importance of this initiative: “My top priority remains the strength of our agricultural sector in eastern Idaho and the preservation of our water resources. The newly allocated funds will help improve the aquifer’s water levels and are part of a comprehensive strategy to protect Idaho’s water destiny. The solutions will ultimately be driven by farmers, not government mandates. I am encouraged by the momentum among farmers to reach a favorable agreement.”

This funding boost is in response to an executive order issued by Governor Little directing the Idaho Water Resource Board (Water Board) to focus on projects that provide net benefits to the aquifer. The additional funds will be allocated to projects aimed at enhancing water supply in eastern Idaho and the Magic Valley.

Bingham County farmer Adam Young voiced his support for the initiative, stating, “The progress we’re making toward sustainable solutions is promising. This funding will be invaluable as we develop and implement infrastructure to protect senior water rights, preserve the aquifer, and support Idaho’s robust agricultural economy.”

The announcement follows Governor Little’s executive order from late June, which terminated a water curtailment that threatened to eliminate water access for nearly 330,000 acres of farmland.
